Central Ohio Poison Center

The Central Ohio Poison Center has been serving 64 of Ohio’s 88 counties for over 50 years. Our specially trained nurses, pharmacists, and toxicologists provide expert assessment and treatment advice for poison related exposures or questions.

The center’s services are available to the public, medical professionals and industry and human agencies. Our helpline handles more than 42,000 poison exposure cases annually, and is available to assist callers with confidential, free emergency poisoning treatment advice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Hannah Hays, MD, FACMT, FAACT, FACEP

Dr. Hays is the medical director of the Central Ohio Poison Center and Chief of Toxicology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She holds an appointment as assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Ohio University Heritage College of Medicine. Hays is recognized as an advocate for poison center involvement in toxicologic disaster response and has been invited to present on this topic to the CDC/ATSDR, EPA National Response Team, North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology, and membership of America’s Poison Centers. Her advocacy work focuses on safe packaging of delta-9-THC in Ohio and common sense regulation of delta-8 and other THC analogs. In this endeavor, she has testified to the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives and has worked with members of both chambers to provide evidence and experience-based packaging recommendations to prevent pediatric poisoning. Dr. Hays has more than 40 publications. Her research and clinical interests include emerging poisons and illicit drugs.

Natalie I. Rine, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP

Natalie I. Rine, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP, is the Director of the Central Ohio Poison Center – Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She is board certified in Pharmacotherapy and Critical Care Pharmacy. Dr. Rine is a graduate of Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy. She completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at ProMedica Toledo Hospital / Toledo Children’s Hospital and a PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Indiana University Health. Dr. Rine’s interests include management of acetaminophen toxicity, drug screening and trends in illicit drug exposures.

Marcel J. Casavant, MD, FACEP, FACMT, FAACT

Dr. Casavant has thirty years of experience as a physician; he is board certified both in Medical Toxicology and in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Casavant is currently a Medical Toxicologist and recently retired Medical Director with the Central Ohio Poison Center. He is also a professor at both the Ohio State University College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy. He has published more than 100 articles, mostly describing new poisoning hazards or teaching new treatments for poisoning. Several of his publications directly lead to policy changes by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, other government agencies, and private industry. Outside the classroom, he has provided public education via local and national news interviews.

Alek Adkins, MD

Dr. Alek Adkins is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at The Ohio State University. He is currently one of the Medical Toxicologists with the Central Ohio Poison Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He also serves as an attending physician with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Adkins got his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from High Point University in High Point, North Carolina. He graduated medical school from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at ChristianaCare in Newark, DE. After residency, he completed his Medical Toxicology fellowship at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA. He is currently board certified in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. Dr. Adkins’ interests include addiction medicine, acute inpatient toxicology, and systems-based delivery methods for antidotal therapy.

Jason Russell, DO

Jason Russell, DO, is board certified in Emergency Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in Medical Toxicology. Dr. Russell completed medical school at Pikeville College/School of Osteopathic Medicine, an Emergency Medicine Residency at Doctors Hospital, and a Fellowship in Medical Toxicology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He is certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in Medical Toxicology. In addition to his time at Memorial Hospital, he has also treated poisoned patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Prashant Joshi, MD, FAAP, FRCPC

Dr. Prashant Joshi is a graduate of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. He has completed post-graduate specialty and sub-specialty training in General Pediatrics, Medical Toxicology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He has over 30 years of experience in Medical Toxicology and over 20 years in Critical Care.  He is board certified in General Pediatrics, Medical Toxicology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His experience includes serving in the roles of Poison Center Medical Director, Critical Care Division Chief, and Vice Chair of Pediatrics. He is in active clinical practice in both toxicology and critical care. He is the host of the Toxicology Quiz Bowl at the annual North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology. He currently serves as a consultant for the Central Ohio Poison Center.
